Busy Start to Summer 2025!
It’s been a busy start to the summer at the CSE Lab! We’ve welcomed new team members, built stuff, supported our research partners, installed instruments, volunteered, and attended conferences!
Living Dyke at Boundary Bay
Our group is conducting research to understand the performance of the Living Dyke, a nature-based coastal adaptation pilot project implemented in Boundary Bay by the City of Surrey, Semiahmoo First Nation, and the City of Delta. This involves field, experimental, and numerical modelling research in partnership with the project proponents, the National Research Council of […]
SFU Climate Innovation: Researcher & Partner Workshop, Vancouver
Enda participated in a workshop organized by Simon Fraser University to exchange ideas, knowledge and strategy about how to advance and accelerate community-centred climate action and innovation with and for communities in BC and across Canada.
Storm-Driven Transport of Coastal Driftwood at Tuktoyaktuk
Communities and infrastructure in Canada’s Arctic regions are facing increasing coastal hazard risk due to the rapidly warming climate and effects, including retreating sea ice (resulting in increased wave and storm-surge exposure), and thawing permafrost (destabilizing coastal sediments). At Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, large quantities of coastal driftwood mobilized by storms have potential to impact community […]
Pacific Salmon Foundation Marsh Symposium
Enda was invited to present at the Marsh Symposium in Victoria from November 20th to 22nd, 2024. It was fascinating to interact with experts from diverse backgrounds, and to learn about amazing coastal marsh restoration projects being undertaken by NGOs, First Nations, academic institutions, and government agencies in Washington State and British Columbia.
Monitoring Waves at the Living Dike
Aerls and Enda joined Jamie from Ducks Unlimited Canada and Marina from Queen’s University at the site of the Living Dike Pilot Project in Boundary Bay on 16th October 2024 to deploy an array of pressure sensors to monitor waves. Monitoring this nature-based pilot project will allow us to better understand how different features and […]
Pacific Workshop on Nature-based Coastal Solutions
Jeremy and Enda attended the Pacific Workshop on Nature-based Coastal Solutions in Vancouver from October 8-10, 2024. Two days of diverse and interesting presentations, and an excellent day of field trips to learn about nature-based solutions projects and initiatives in Burrard Inlet, including Tsleil-Waututh (səlilwətaɬ) Nation reserve, and New Brighton Park.
Beneficial Use of Dredged Sediment at Sturgeon Bank
Enda and Jeremy had a unique opportunity to visit Sturgeon Bank on the day of dredged sediment placement via pipeline. Thanks to Eric, Jamie and Meagan from Ducks Unlimited Canada for facilitating our site visit.
38th International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE2024), Rome
Enda attended ICCE2024 from 6-13 September in the Eternal City. Great fun meeting friends and former colleagues, and delicious pasta, pizza, and cappuccinos! Lots of interesting talks on topics like compound flood hazard modelling and nature-based solutions, and a short course on SFINCS provided by Deltares. Great making new connections with groups in the US, Netherlands, and Germany interested […]
Understanding Sediment Transport Pathways at Sturgeon Bank
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is leading the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project (SBSEPP), which involves testing and demonstrating how dredged sediment from the Fraser River estuary can be beneficially used to restore tidal marshes and simultaneously provide coastal flood protection to the low-lying City of Richmond in the Metro Vancouver region in British Columbia. […]
